Yes, the application can mount BIN files, but as you can see in the screenshot, you will also need a CUE file along with the BIN one. This CUE files is actually mounted in the application and it tells DAEMON Tools Lite what to mount, size, etc.
I have also tried and it works without the CUE file, but not all images are compatible.

Yes, the application can be used to burn ISO files, but not in the FREE Mode. You will need the activated version of Daemon Tools in order to burn ISO file. As you can see in the image below, there is a Disc Burn option, but it needs to be unlocked in order to burn it.

I mount an image in DT Lite 4.45.4.0314, and it says 'license checking'. It takes minutes and is really annoying. Sometimes it just keeps checking and checking until I shut the process down and restart the program. Is there a way to turn it off?

The License Checking takes too much time because one component of the DAEMON Tools Lite is not working properly. This can be easily fixed through a reinstallation procedure. I recommend reinstalling the software then watch its behavior. Additionally, when you install it make sure to use Run as Administrator. The same goes for its launch.
If you keep having issues, go to Start > Run > devmgmt.msc and locate the DAEMON Tools in the list. If it's with a yellow marker, right click it and then remove the device. Press the Scan button and let Windows install the driver again. Launch the software and the issue should disappear.

After you mount the image into the virtual drive, an auto-run application should start. However, this won't happen if you choose not to as default. In this case, open your My Computer, right click on the virtual drive and select Auto-run. In some cases, it's possible that the game won't have an auto-run and you will have to manually start the setup process. This can be done by opening the Setup.exe file from the virtual disc.
The license that you received is available only for a specific version of the software (in this case the Lite one). For example, you cannot install the Pro Advance version of the software using the Lite version license. Also, it is possible that you cannot upgrade to a newer version of the software for free. In this case I recommend you contact the developer on the following website to clarify what software in particular can you use with the license that you already have.

You encounter this errors because the application is not properly handing integration features. To fix it, go to Daemon Tools Lite and access the settings menu (wheel icon). Switch to the Integration and deselect then select all the boxes. Apply and then double click the image file and it should be automatically mounted.

Is there a portable version of DTools Lite? I heard that there is, but no mention of a portable program on the site.

No, there is no official version released as Portable. To make the application portable, install it normally, and then copy the entire installation folder to a location of choice (eg. USB drive). Connect it to another computer and launch it from that directory. If you add a drive, the driver needs to be installed. Simply point Windows installer to the directory of the Daemon Tools Lite and everything should be OK.
